A greenhorn 14 years ago, Dr Edwin Wong King-por joined the Institute with enormous enthusiasm. Former President, Professor Ruth Hayhoe gave him a rather intimate nickname — “Little Ball” (the character “Por” in his Chinese name can mean “ball”).

In 1999, Dr Wong was appointed Head of the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (now re-titled Director of the School of Continuing and Professional Education). Since Dr Wong became chief of a self-financed institution, he has also been “upgraded” to “Master Little Ball”.
Dr Wong never forgets the enlightening analogy Professor Hayhoe made between the Story of Saving the Starfish and HKIEd’s vision and mission. Starfish stranded on the beach will die from lack of oxygen. By the same token, society cannot advance over time without continuing education, as its competitiveness will be affected.

For years, HKIEd has maintained close communication with the education sector. “Master Little Ball” and his colleagues share the same belief — to realise the Story of Saving the Starfish again and again, by responding to demands arising from constant social special change. In recent years, our student intake has increased tremendously. From Project Yi Jin, Associate Degree Programmes, language benchmark exams to training courses for school principals and school board directors, “Master Little Ball’s” achievements have been widely recognised. Dr Wong’s perseverance has not been in vain, and he will surely continue his Story of Saving the Starfish.
