Angie has been working at the HKIEd for 12 years. Moving from Senior Tutor of Northcote Hall to warden of the Jockey Club Student Quarters three years ago, Angie spends so much of her time at the HKIEd that she must breathe Institute air 24 hours a day.

“Except when I am on vacation overseas, I am a 7-24 ‘JC (Jockey Club Student Quarters) person’,” Angie says with a smile.

In the eyes of many Mainland Chinese student residents, Angie is a dearly-loved member of their family.

Owing to the savage snowstorms earlier this year, many Mainland students were unable to go home. Angie invited them to her home for the Chinese New Year celebrations, serving them homemade turnip cakes, glutinous rice cakes (also known as Chinese New Year cakes) and
Hong Kong style dim sum and snacks. Angie’s hospitality, at this very special time of year, gave the students an opportunity to celebrate the holidays in the warmth of a “second home”.

“Mainland students in particular value their families and relatives. Going home to celebrate the Chinese New Year is the major highlight of the year. Inviting students, who were unable to go home, to my place was a small gesture and it gave them the chance to experience the mutual support and care, we can all give in difficult times or unexpected circumstances, for themselves.”
