“My neighbours all gazed admiringly at me in my school uniform. I would wear my school uniform wherever I went, whether attending class or going to a banquet... Being able to study in a College of Education and to receive formal teacher’s training is something to be very proud of!”
Mocked as a “little monkey” during
adolescence, Mr Lu recalls his glorious
past with enthusiasm.
In 1960, Mr Lu was admitted to the Sir Robert Black College of Education which had just been established. For this first cohort of students,
the College did not yet have its own building or school uniform. For the first three months, he had to attend class together with students from the Grantham College of Education, wearing the same school uniform as well.
“The first thing I did when I returned home was to wash my school uniform and then hang it up to dry at an open window, so that I could wear it again the next day.” Although those grey trousers, white shirt and blue blazer have long become relics, they have left sweet and everlasting memories for Mr Lu.
