  • GPT-4o is upgraded to a newer version, which supports longer outputs.
  • Monthly credit is increased from 700,000 to 1,000,000 for both staff and students.

Updates on 31 May 2024:

  • GPT-4 is upgraded to GPT-4o, which supports the input of text and up to four images in a single prompt.
  • Dall·E 3 for digital image generation is released.

Updates on 2 May 2024:

  • The use of GPT-4 is extended to students.
  • Monthly credit is increased from 500,000 to 700,000 for both staff and students.

EdUHK has adopted a chatbot-based large language model (LLM), using Microsoft Azure OpenAI service, that generates text in dialogue format so as to facilitate the University community to embrace the technology. Hosted on campus, the service provides similar functionality to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Microsoft, unlike other AI tools such as OpenAI, we do not record your conversation history for any future AI model training. Colleagues may delete their conversation history at their own discretion at any time while students’ conversation history is kept on the University server for record purposes, e.g. for course instructor’s review if necessary.  Please read and accept the terms and conditions of using ChatGPT at EdUHK before using the service.

EdUHK staff and students are provided with GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini and DALL·E 3. They can access and experience the AI tool at https://chatgpt.eduhk.hk/ with their network account and password through the EdUHK network or via VPN while away from campus. Each user is given a monthly credit of 1,000,000 units to use the chatbot service.

Note: Since our service is based on Microsoft Azure OpenAI, the provision of our service may be subject to changes in Microsoft’s technology, policies, and terms of service. We will make every effort to inform you of any changes that may arise.

Please note that other generative AI tools such as POE (https://poe.com/) from Quora and Copilot (https://copilot.microsoft.com/) from Microsoft are hosted by external parties. Colleagues are therefore advised to avoid disclosing confidential, sensitive or personal information, especially if you are not sure how the data is kept or used. As a general principle, please opt for our service, if confidential, sensitive or personal data is to be used. Again, it is best to remove or mask sensitive data before using any AI tools.

Terminology

There are some new terms used in ChatGPT and below are a few to help you get started.

  1. Prompts / Queries - Your text input to ChatGPT to get what you want it to do.
  2. Completions / Responses - The return from ChatGPT for your prompt / query.  We currently support text returns only.
  3. Credit Units - The lengths and consumptions of the prompt / query and completion / response are calculated in terms of tokens by Microsoft Azure OpenAI. Tokens can be words or just chunks of characters. (Please see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cognitive-services/openai/overview#tokens for more details.) The amount of tokens consumed is more than just counting the words in your current prompt because ChatGPT also needs to consider your previous conversations.
  4. There are a few ChatGPT models available now. Users should choose the model to use according to individual needs.
ModelCredit consumption speed / Credit consumption

Other Generative AI Tools

There are other generative AI tools on the market, such as the following. Colleagues are advised to avoid disclosing confidential, sensitive or personal information in the prompt / query when using these tools.

  1. Microsoft Copilot
Open a web browser and access https://copilot.microsoft.com/.
  2. Quora POE
Register the free service of POE by accessing https://poe.com/. You need to provide your email address or phone number to complete the registration. POE also supports mobile devices running iOS or Android. Download it from https://poe.com/download/.

Please observe the 6-P pedagogical approach promulgated by the University earlier (https://www.lttc.eduhk.hk/papers/6p.pdf), which promotes the productive use of AI-enabled text-generating tools for the development of critical and/or reflective thinking by students.

EdUHK ChatGPT API

EdUHK ChatGPT Application Programming Interface (API) Gateway is now available. Upon application, departments or projects can adopt our ChatGPT services to build chatbots or virtual assistants on their system/application, and more. The service is provided on a credit-based mechanism, and user departments or projects will be charged for credit consumptions.
