The learning tools of language - games, songs and action
"During my previous school teaching programmes, students used to ask me to teach their English classes in Chinese. I thought they were at fault, with their poor English holding them back from participating in the classes. My experience in Inner Mongolia has completely reversed my perspective. Ms Chung, an experienced teacher who accompanied us on the tour, broadened my vision. Even though the students in Inner Mongolia may not understand English, we, as teachers, are responsible for their learning. We found that action had a prime role to play. For example, when teaching the term "stand up", we needed to repeat the pronunciation clearly while using action and body language to get the message across. Games and songs were also a great help. The plan worked well and we successfully adopted English as the teaching medium over the three weeks of the course. The experience has greatly boosted our inspiration and confidence," reported Sammy Ip, a final year Bachelor of Education (Languages) student.
