Every year, the Institute welcomes on board a number of mature students as new entrants to the teaching profession. Amounting to around 3% of the total student intake, they are often people who have chosen to turn a new leaf in life because of an overwhelming aspiration to become a professional teacher.
After the 2004 Scholarship Presentation Ceremony, Joy of Learning spoke to two of them whose aspirations to become teachers had taken them on different life paths.
Giving up a well-paid job to achieve his heart's desire
Dr Suen Ka-chun, Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) Programme
Driven by his heart's desire, Ka-chun boldly retreated
from a high-paid
research job for his dream profession - Teaching.
Before studying in the Institute, Suen Ka-chun had already been awarded his PhD in anatomy and was engaged in much-coveted and highly-paid university research work. Inspired by religious belief, Ka-chun determined to change to a career that he felt truly builds life, and he applied for the Institute's postgraduate diploma programme in education.
