Pun's story
It all started with a letter to the Chief Executive asking for his approval
for an act of euthanasia. The story of our quadriplegic alumnus, Tang Siu-pun,
has aroused deep concern and sympathy from various sectors of the community
ever since.
The year was 1991, when Pun was an active student of Northcote College of Education, majoring in physical education and social studies. A terrible accident during a training session crippled Pun, both body and mind. He became a quadriplegic and was bed-ridden for more than ten years.
We Care and We Help
When we learned of the request to the Chief Executive, the Institute rallied
round. To show our support for Pun, the Alumni Affairs Secretariat of the
Institute joined with the Northcote College of Education Past Students' Association
to initiate a "Care for Pun" Campaign. This Campaign aims to coordinate
the care and support for Pun from all walks of the Hong Kong community. A
bank account was established to collect donations that have amounted to HK$558,998.31.
The entire sum was put under trust by the Social Welfare Department of the
Hong Kong SAR Government.
