Transferring Knowledge on Advanced Teaching Approaches to English Word Stress and Intonation

The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) and Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies (CRLLS) co-organised a workshop series on ‘Teaching English Word Stress and Intonation: Rules, Acoustics, Tools, and AI’ on 22, 24, and 25 November 2023.

Enhancement of Modern Language Learning and Teaching

LML had the privilege of hosting two esteemed guests in November 2023: Prof Kim Jung-sup from Kyung Hee University in Korea and Prof Izumimoto Chiharu from Nara Education University in Japan. These visits provided excellent opportunities for LML colleagues to engage in fruitful discussions with the visiting professors to explore various avenues for collaboration, marking an important milestone in its journey toward internationalisation. Both professors expressed a keen interest in co-developing events that will enhance student exchanges and promote cultural understanding among students from different regions or universities. These collaborative initiatives hold great promise in enriching the educational experience of our students, fostering a truly global outlook.

Sailing to Xinhui Jiangmen: A Cultural Trip to Remember

This Xinhui Jiangmen Field trip, held from 31 August to 1 September 2023, was a pioneering cultural trip organised by the Faculty of Humanities. Led by Prof Jackie Lee Fung-king and Dr Hawk Chang Tsung-chi, the expedition succeeded in helping undergraduates have a better understanding of Chinese history and culture and the development of contemporary China through a series of first-hand encounters with historic and natural sites in Xinhui Jiangmen, such as Xinhui Museum and Liang Qichao’s Former Residence and Chakeng Village. The visit to Asia Symbol (Guangdong) Paper Company Limited (Asia Symbol) also inspired us on business innovation, entrepreneurship, teamwork and state-of-the-art industrial development in contemporary China.

Newly Published Article ‘Making a Global Beauty Business: The Rise and Fall of Hong Kong Wigs in the 1960s’

Abstract:
This article analyses how a beauty business from the 1960s went global. During this time, the wig industry in Hong Kong degenerated, from a lucrative global beauty business that was worth US$1 billion, into collapse. Analysis of this episode is used to re-evaluate how the history of globalisation is currently presented. Rather than accepting Hong Kong as an example of laissez-faire, dematerialised global capitalism, this industry illustrates how a set of relationships emerged over time due to connections built between Hong Kong and India and China. It goes on to explain how Cold War politics led to a surprise US embargo on what was considered to be ‘communist’ Asian hair. Finally, Hong Kong businesses found themselves under the surveillance of an intrusive British government. By guaranteeing quality and origin, Hong Kong businesses in this industry had managed to overcome the strong level of distrust inherent in global trade. However, this was not enough to prevail given subsequent unexpected events.

云南师范大学代表团访问语文教育中心

云南师范大学代表团在2023年12月14日访问语文教育中心（中心），访问团队由四位来自教育学部的学者组成，包括杨斌教授、马金晶博士、冯丽婷博士和李孝川博士。中心向代表团介绍其两文三语语文增润课程及各类语言文化活动，并分享中心未来语言教育发展的方向和计划。是次访问在语文教育方面为双方提供交流经验和观点的宝贵机会

中国语言及中文教育研究中心与校外研究机构加强学术合作

为展开具影响力的学术研究，香港教育大学中国语言及中文教育研究中心（CRCLE）于2023年6月和9月分别与北京大学中国语言学研究中心（CCL）、北京语言大学国际中文教育研究院（RIICLE）、新加坡华文教研中心（SCCL）续签了「学术交流合作协议」，有效期为三年。CRCLE将与三间研究机构在中国语言学、汉语作为第一与第二语言教学等研究方面进行以下合作：(1) 交换访问学者；(2) 联合举办国际学术会议；(3) 联合申请竞逐性研究资助；(4) 共同指导研究生； (5) 共享研究资源。协议签署后，北大CCL主任陈保亚教授、北语RIICLE副主任姜丽萍教授、RIICLE的郑艳群教授和SCCL执行主任符传丰博士于2023年10月和11月到访香港教育大学中国语言及中文教育研究中心。同时为田家炳教育基金资助的访问学者，陈保亚教授和郑艳群教授为教大的师生主讲了四场有关语言接触和国际汉语教育的学术讲座，并与教大的研究人员进行学术交流。香港教育大学中国语言及中文教育研究中心的林善敏博士和丁泓棣博士亦以访问学者的身份，分别于2023年7月和12月前往新加坡华文教研中心和北京大学中国语言学研究中心进行学术交流与访问。

IRCCS Successfully Holds the ‘Hong Kong 2023 Humanities Conference on Comparative Cultures of Care’: The First of Its Kind in Hong Kong

The International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) has concluded its highly anticipated conference in November 2023: ‘Hong Kong 2023 Humanities Conference on Comparative Cultures of Care’. The event took place on 2-3 November at The Education University of Hong Kong and simultaneously online to an international audience.

中国文学文化研究中心于2023年8月11日举办第二届「三毫子小说」学术研讨会。这次会议吸引来自各领域的学者、研究人员和文学爱好者前来参与，共同发掘三毫子小说的学术魅力。会议以「连结」为主题，探讨三毫子小说与不同研究视角之间的互动。报告学者发表有关三毫子小说研究领域的见解，以及进行深刻的讨论。研究中心透过研讨会，不仅推动各方的学术联系与交流，也促进不同文化和地区对通俗小说的研究广度与深度，从而推动学术界对三毫子小说的学术交流，在三毫子小说研究方面探索更多可能性。
