FHM and CCA Students Embark on Two Enriching Cross-Disciplinary Academic Trips

The Faculty of Humanities (FHM) has initiated two academic trips to bring students from FHM and the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA, FLASS) on cross-disciplinary journeys to top mainland universities. One group focusing on visual art visited Tsinghua University, Beijing; the other music-focused group visited the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and two more prestigious universities in Chengdu. These trips provided a unique opportunity for students to engage in an exchange of ideas, foster collaboration, and experience the rich cultural heritage of mainland China.

Wonderful School Visits and Learning Opportunities in Professional Development Programmes for English Teachers

EdUHK has a long tradition of offering a wide range of Professional Development Programmes (PDPs) for in-service teachers in Hong Kong. This year, thanks to the kindness of the principals from Kornhill Victoria Kindergarten, Fairchild Nursery & Kindergarten, and North Point Methodist Primary School, teacher participants in the PDPs for Primary Teachers of English (1 week), Cohort 3, had the opportunity to conduct three on-site visits and engage in professional exchange.

A Rewarding Trip to Explore Turkish Culture and History

In May 2024, Ms Bibi Tayyaba, a lecturer at the Department of English Language Education, collaborated with the Department of Education Policy and Leadership to organise a cultural exchange tour in Turkey. The tour presented students with a distinctive and captivating chance to delve into Turkish culture, explore historical landmarks, engage in educational activities, and cultivate cross-cultural understanding and global perspectives.

The Global Empowerment Project: English for All in Indonesia

From 11 to 18 May 2024, a team of 14 students and three staff members from the Department of English Language Education (ELE), Drs Lee Ju-seong, Tim Taylor, and April Liu, set out on an inspiring journey as part of the Global Empowerment Project to Surakarta, Indonesia. Their goal was to share the gift of English education and promote cultural exchange.

Promoting Cantonese Input Keyboard TypeDuck to Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong

TypeDuck is a Cantonese input keyboard that allows users to type Chinese characters with Cantonese Jyutping romanisation. This keyboard was developed by the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) and publicly released in January 2024. This keyboard provides word translation prompts in English, Indonesian, Nepali, and Urdu to aid Cantonese learners in selecting the correct Chinese characters.

汉传佛教：东亚文化圈的一条纽带

汉传佛教维系着由中国汉地、韩半岛、日本列岛、越南北部组成的东亚文化圈，对宗教信仰、文学、绘画、书法、雕塑、建筑等领域影响深远。商海锋博士设计的课程「GEL2015汉传佛教：东亚文化圈的一条纽带」乃香港教育大学唯一一个纯宗教史课程。

「园．心」初中生散文创作比赛颁奖礼

香港教育大学于2024年5月11日举行「园．心」初中生散文创作比赛颁奖礼。是次比赛由文学及文化学系与科学与环境学系合办，征集了325份合资格稿件，合共56所本地中学参与。经过严谨评审过程，最终选出包括冠亚季军、优异奖及嘉许奖在内的得奖作品。

「享受音乐 学好粤语」工作坊

由语文教育中心和文化与创意艺术学系合办的「享受音乐 学好粤语」工作坊于2024年4月19日成功举行。是次工作坊由文化与创意艺术学系的教育博士毕业生和语文教育中心的学生语言大使共同主持，将粤语元素与音乐活动相结合，为参与者提供沉浸式的语言学习体验，让他们在创意环境中提升对粤语的理解和运用能力。在活动中，非粤语为母语的同学可以透过将音乐融入语言学习的创新方式，愉快有效地学习粤语。

New Book Celebrates Indigenous Languages of Hong Kong

The Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies (CRLLS) is thrilled to announce the publication of a new Chinese book, 《围头与客家：香港本土语言故事集》(Waitau and Hakka: A Story Collection in Indigenous Languages), in June 2024. This book, authored by CRLLS Director Dr Lau Chaak-ming and Mr Gary Tang Yee-kai, features 40 annotated stories from the Waitau and Hakka languages, as well as chapters focusing on their phonologies, historical development, and ongoing revitalisation efforts.

Rethinking the Future with ‘Slow Hope’ in Hong Kong and Beyond: IRCCS Concludes its Environmental Humanities Symposium ‘A Gathered Dialogue: Eco-Afterlives and Slow Hope’

In collaboration with the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, The International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) hosted a two-day symposium titled ‘A Gathered Dialogue: Eco-Afterlives and Slow Hope’ from 13 to 14 May 2024. The event took place at the Education University of Hong Kong and on Lamma Island, drawing attention to the burgeoning field of Environmental Humanities.

At the beginning of 2024, the Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture (RCCLLC) organised two Hong Kong Literary Culture Salons, which aim to provide a platform for literature enthusiasts and writers to exchange ideas and showcase their works.

在国际汉语教学文学硕士课程中，修读汉语专题及教学法填补了我的专业知识空缺。课程除了提供充实的理论知识，还提供教学实践机会。课程实习助我成功融入英国当地教育环境、获得教学经验，并让我毕业后顺利取得英国政府认可的教师培训，成为国际认可的语言教师。
