Role of facilitator

            Role of facilitator

            Motivation

One of the crucial responsibilities of a facilitator is to motivate people in his/her organisation so
that they can stay positive and productive. Motivating all people in an organisation at once could
be difficult; instead, leaders can try to motivate the people in the organisation in three phases,

namely forming a guiding group, forming professional learning communities (PLC), and finally,
            motivating all colleagues.

              Technique Description

Forming a guiding group means to build a ‘core team’ within a team. It
could be broken down into four steps:
                                            1. A passionate leader comes up
                                            2. Selecting the right combination of capabilities within teams
                                            3. Pulling people in and pushing people out
              Forming guiding group
‘Pulling’ means showing others the importance of the effort and the
                                                 privilege of being chosen.
‘Pushing’ means removing someone from a group to correct a
                                                 certain problem(s).
                                            4. Transforming guiding groups to guiding coalitions

Teachers in a PLC meets regularly to share their expertise in a specific
Forming professional area of teaching, aiming to enhance the learning outcomes of
learning communities students. They work collaboratively to improve the curriculum and
                                          their teaching skills.

            Create Short-term wins
Another strategy to motivate team members is to create ‘short-term wins.’ In addition to
long-term, annual goals, a leader should also set up simple, relatively short-term goals. This

enables the team to be more focused to complete the specific goal(s). More importantly,
achieving short-term wins energises the team members and enlightens the pessimists. An ideal
short-term win fulfils the following two features—

              Technique Description
                                            Early wins that come fast
              Simple
Wins that are as visible as possible and to as many people as possible
                                            e.g. School newsletter, Prize presentation
Wins that penetrate emotional defences by being unambiguous
Touching Wins that are meaningful to others
Wins that are supported by powerful players
