Professor Angel Lin Mei-yi Shares Her Aspirations as Chair Professor at FHM (FHM)

Dr Cong Wang and Prof Giorgio Francesco Arcodia Collaborate on Innovative Chinese Linguistic Research (CHL)

 

Supported by Dean’s International Research Collaboration Award, Dr Cong Wang of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) invited Prof Giorgio Francesco Arcodia from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to visit The Education University of Hong Kong from 6 to 15 Mar 2024.

  • Prof Arcodia, Dr Wang and her ANR-RGC (The French National Research Agency/Research Grants Council Joint Research Scheme) project team had a stimulating seminar on Chinese linguistics during the visit.
  • The seminar delved into the progress of Dr Wang’s project, sparking fruitful discussions about potential international collaborative opportunities.
  • Prof Arcodia presented a hybrid lecture on areal distinctions in Sinitic, attracting over 70 participants and stimulating thought-provoking discussions.
  • Prof Arcodia joined a fieldwork expedition with Dr Wang’s team for the ANR-RGC project and contributed his valuable insights.
  • The collaboration between Dr Wang and Prof Arcodia sets a foundation for further groundbreaking advancements in Chinese linguistic studies.
  • The event exemplifies the critical role of Dean’s International Research Collaboration Award in facilitating creative research cooperation across nations.

Dr Lee Ju Seong Named PROSE Finalist by Association of American Publishers (ELE)

 

Dr Lee Ju Seong, Acting Head of Department of English Language Education (ELE), has been named a finalist in the Language and Linguistics category at the 2024 Professional and Scholarship Excellence (PROSE) Awards for his book, English Language Learning in the Digital Age, published by Wiley-Blackwell.

  • Co-authors: Prof Mark Dressman, Dr Lee Ju Seong, and Dr Laurent Perrot
  • The book investigates the innovative application of IDLE (Informal Digital Learning of English) to bridge the gap between formal and informal English learning in the digital and AI era.

Special Issue of ChinaCALL Journal Co-Edited by Dr Ma
Qing and Dr Wang Lixun Released in May 2024 (LML)

 

The May 2024 special issue of the Journal of China Computer Assisted Language Learning (ChinaCALL), co-edited by Dr Ma Qing and Dr Wang Lixun of Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML), has been published. Dr Stella Meng Wang Explores the History of Women’s Education in Interwar Hong Kong (LCS)

 

The paper of Dr Stella Meng Wang explores how St Stephen's Girls' College in Hong Kong strategically positioned itself as an educational hub for the "useful women of China" during Republican China. By focusing on science education and social service, the school aimed to prepare a class of "career women" to contribute to the modernisation of China in alignment with colonial state objectives.

  • The research examines history of women’s education in interwar Hong Kong.
  • It looks at how school magazines and English newspapers as a literary space help to construct new forms of feminine usefulness.
  • It uses a case-study approach and focuses on the everyday life at St Stephen’s Girls’ College.
  • It is of interest to researchers in the fields of history of education, women’s history, and urban history.

IRCCS Hosts Dr Elmo Gonzaga’s Book Talk for Monsoon Marketplace (IRCCS)

On 5 Mar, 2024, the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) hosted Dr Elmo Gonzaga (CUHK)’s book talk on Monsoon Martketplace:Capitalism, Media, and Modernity in Manila and Singapore, a recently published monograph by Fordham University Press.

  • Monsoon Martketplace compares commercial spaces in Manila and Singapore during three historical periods: the 1930s, 1960s, and 2000s.
  • Dr Gonzaga argued that comparison reveals the contingent, variable, pluralistic and archipelagic effects of capitalism.
  • Dr Gonzaga also presented historical videos of the commercial spaces of Manila and Singapore during the talk.
  • 15 participants at the Humanities Research Hub and online were delighted by the talk and actively engaged in the discussion.
  • The event shows IRCCS’s efforts in fostering dialogues with other local cultural studies centres for EdUHK students and researchers.

The 3rd International Conference of the Thanatic Ethics Project: ‘Death “Matters”: The (Im)material and the Sensory in Death in Migration’ (IRCCS)

The International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) and the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) hosted the 'Death "Matters": The (Im)material and the Sensory in Death in Migration' conference at EdUHK from 7-9 Jan, 2024. This was the 3rd international conference of the Thanatic Ethics project led by Dr Bidisha Banerjee (LCS).

  • The conference explored the complexities of the materiality/immateriality of the body in relation to death in migration.
  • Prof May Cheng [VP(AC), EdUHK] and Prof John Erni (Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Director of IRCCS) were honored guests.
  • Keynote addresses were given by Prof Catherine Bernard (Universite Paris Cite) and Prof Edwige Tamalet (Tulane University).
  • 16 international speakers presented topics surrounding the sensory dimension of death in migration, rituals, remembrance, mourning, and scholarly art approaches.
  • The conference concluded with the screening of the film and a dialogue with the director, Dagmawi Yimer.
  • The conference has advanced the Critical Migration Studies within IRCCS, and consolidated a wide international network that promotes interdisciplinary research.

  • This captivating exhibition held from 3rd Jan, 2024 (Wed) to 7th May, 2024 (Tue).
  • It is located at the Cultural and Historical Resources Corner on the 8th floor of Hong Kong Central Library.
  • Audience can explore the creative world of Hong Kong writers, experiencing their unique perspectives and stories.
  • It showcased the diverse facets of Tai Po literature, including literary works, photographs, and related documents, presenting a vivid and enriching literary landscape.
