In November 2024, the renowned Hong Kong author Mr Dung Kai-cheung visited the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) to offer his advice, expertise, and experience. Five public events were held, including two headline events which were collaborations between LCS and FHM’s research centres. LCS and the Research Centre for Chinese Literature & Literary Culture (RCCLLC) held the event ‘Transformation, Evolution, and Impact of Publishing Platforms’ (「出版樣態的轉型、衝擊與邁進」座談會) , an discussion opportunity on how new technology is changing the publishing industry, particularly in East Asia. Working alongside the Department of Special Education and Counselling at EdUHK, LCS and the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) hosted ‘Writing and Wellbeing’, an interdisciplinary dialogue about the relationship between expressive writing and mental health. Presenting alongside Mr Dung was psychologist Dr Rebecca Cheung from Xi’an Jaiotong-Liverpool University. Both headline events were successful, with lively and engaging discussion from presenters and the audience.
In addition, Mr Dung conducted a writing workshop entitled ‘In Dimension 2.5: A Writing Workshop with Dung Kai-cheung’ (「穿梭2.5次元:董啟章導引文學創作坊」) . Students were enthusiastic about how to interact with the characters they had created. In his lecture ‘Machine Translation and Hong Kong Literature’, Mr Dung discussed how artificial intelligence is changing literary translation and opening up new avenues for cross-cultural exchange. Finally, students and staff enjoyed a film screening and discussion with Mr Dung, with keen questions from the audience about the relationships between humans and characters, robots, aliens, gods, and other more-than-human entities.
The writer’s visit was part of ‘One City One Book Hong Kong’, a community reading project launched by LCS and IRCCS. The project completed its fifth year of operation in 2024, hosting around 30 events for primary and secondary students, scholars, and readers citywide. Directed by Dr Jeffrey Clapp from LCS, the organiser was delighted to work closely with Mr Dung in 2024, and it looks forward to continued community impact and outreach.
