The International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) and the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) successfully hosted the ‘Writing + Live & In-Person Day Camp’ from 7 to 13 July 2024. As an extended dialogue from the well-received course ‘GEL2013 Becoming a Writer: Writing About the Self and the World’, part of the ‘Pedagogy of Care’ Scheme 2023/24 Semester I under the ‘Comparative Cultures of Care’ project, this writing camp particularly focused on self-care, creative expression, and artistic creation through a series of interdisciplinary workshops and experiential activities.
The programme was led by IRCCS members Mr Nicholas Wong and Mr Sy Wai-nok, and featured workshops by a stellar lineup of instructors, including Dr Tong Yui, writer and scholar from Hong Kong Baptist University; Mr Ricky Yeung, artist and art educator; Prof Hung Keung, digital media artist and scholar from EdUHK, Dr Angus Lee, writer; Ms Wong Yi, writer; Mr Oscar Lee, lyricist; Mr Chan Kin-on, singer-songwriter; Mr Chan Sai-lok, artist and writer; and Mr Tsang Kam-yin, poet and art educator. They shared their expertise, inspiring participants’ creative journeys. These rich and diverse activities not only broadened students’ creative horizons, but also enhanced their practical abilities and artistic literacy.
During the week-long camp, 24 EdUHK students embarked on a caring journey, channeling their personal experiences and care for the world into impactful self-expression. Participants expressed high levels of satisfaction with the writing camp, noting that it provided valuable support for their creative journeys. They highlighted how the camp enhanced their writing skills, deepened their interest in literary creation, broadened their understanding of various art forms, and guided them through a self-exploring and self-healing process.
