TypeDuck is a software keyboard that aims to lower the threshold for Chinese learning among the ethnic minorities of Hong Kong. This SCOLAR-funded project, led by Dr Lau Chaak-ming, was completed in June 2024 with great success. In the second half of 2024, CRLLS continued to improve the software and promote the project in Hong Kong.
The team launched a web version of TypeDuck (https://www.typeduck.hk/web), enabling users to input Chinese characters without installation. Their outreach efforts included conducting a teachers’ training workshop at Delia Memorial School (Glee Path) and organising three student workshops at ECF Saint Too Cannan College and two at United Christian College (Kowloon East), where students learned Jyutping basics through interactive games. A significant milestone was the TypeDuck experiential learning seminar at EdUHK, which attracted 50 non-Chinese-speaking students and 10 teachers from four secondary schools: Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College, HKWMA Chu Shek Lun Secondary School, Lui Ming Choi Lutheran College, and Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School.
It is hoped that this tool will continue to be a key resource in future Chinese education in Hong Kong.
