From 11 to 18 May 2024, a team of 14 students and three staff members from the Department of English Language Education (ELE), Drs Lee Ju-seong, Tim Taylor, and April Liu, set out on an inspiring journey as part of the Global Empowerment Project to Surakarta, Indonesia. Their goal was to share the gift of English education and promote cultural exchange.
The empowerment team created five original Digital Storytelling (DST) books, which acted as cultural connectors and enhanced the learning experience. Armed with these resources, they taught English at three local secondary schools, engaging students with interactive and enriching lessons.
Outside the classroom, the team dived into Indonesian culture by participating in local traditions, arts, and cuisine and fostered mutual understanding and appreciation with the community.
In collaboration with students from Universitas Sebelas Maret, the team also took on a community service project and helped promote a local coffee shop. By working with the shop owners, they aimed to increase awareness of and support for this vital local business, thus contributing to the community’s economic growth.
Throughout the week, the team’s efforts led to meaningful interactions, inspiring lessons, and a shared commitment to educational impact. The Global Empowerment Project showcases ELE’s dedication to making positive changes worldwide.
