The Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies (CRLLS) is thrilled to announce the publication of a new Chinese book, 《圍頭與客家:香港本土語言故事集》(Waitau and Hakka: A Story Collection in Indigenous Languages), in June 2024. This book, authored by CRLLS Director Dr Lau Chaak-ming and Mr Gary Tang Yee-kai, features 40 annotated stories from the Waitau and Hakka languages, as well as chapters focusing on their phonologies, historical development, and ongoing revitalisation efforts.
CRLLS’s work has been greatly supported by the invaluable contributions of residents from villages across the New Territories and the recording and computing facilities of the centre. The materials were prepared with Digital Humanities best practices in mind. The digitised data and compiled resources have been made available online and have been used to improve dictionaries and text-to-speech tools.
This book project is a showcase of CRLLS’s dedication to sustainable corpus research and development. With support from the Faculty Development Fund provided by FHM, there is an ongoing initiative to consolidate the extensive collection of language data projects created by FHM colleagues. These efforts will further contribute to the preservation and appreciation of Hong Kong’s rich linguistic diversity, as well as other corpus-based language and social sciences research.
