Hong Kong Literary Culture Salons: Fostering Dialogue and Showcasing Hong Kong’s Literary Talent

At the beginning of 2024, the Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture (RCCLLC) organised two Hong Kong Literary Culture Salons, which aim to provide a platform for literature enthusiasts and writers to exchange ideas and showcase their works.

On 9 January 2024 , we invited Hong Kong writer Ms Cheung Yuen-man to share her creative experiences with the theme ‘Writing Oppression in Oppression’, moderated by Dr Sabrina Yeung Choi-kit, Assistant Professor of the Chinese Department at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. Ms Cheung eloquently described how she employs her craft to document the lives of the suppressed and forgotten people in the city. She also examined how the act of writing reflects our own suppressed states and circumstances.

On 26 January 2024, we invited Dr Chen Yanyi, literary scholar; Waterbear, Hong Kong illustrator and picture book writer; and Ms Bhakta Ng, picture book writer and psychotherapist to another salon with the theme ‘Enter the Bunny Hole: How Adults Talk About Picture Books’ (走進兔子洞：大人談繪本). They shared their own discoveries about picture books through the angle of an adult and discussed the definition of picture books as well as the meanings for audiences in different age groups. Waterbear and Ms Ng shared insights into picture book creation, which impressed the readers.

Through these interactive events, Hong Kong Literary Culture Salons help promote the development of Hong Kong literature and enhance the public’s understanding and interest in local literary creations.
