GloMED Project with the University of Lapland (Finland)

The Education University of Hong Kong has been partnering with the University of Lapland for three years on the Global Media Education (GloMED) project (https://glomed.webnode.fi/) funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education. The Project Team comprised Dr Satu-Maarit Korte (Principal Investigator), Prof Pigga Keskitalo and Prof Mari Maasilta from the University of Lapland, and President Prof John Lee Chi-Kin (Principal Investigator), Prof Kong Siu-cheung, Dr William Cheung Man-yin, FHM staff Dr Lau Chaak-ming, Dr Wang Lixun, and Prof Michelle Gu Mingyue from The Education University of Hong Kong.

The GloMED project, which aims to develop a joint study course on Global Media Education through collaborative knowledge exchange between experts, is based on collaboration between the two universities in the UNITWIN/UNESCO Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity in Education.

Hosted by FHM, Dr Satu-Maarit Korte and Prof Mari Maasilta from the University of Lapland visited EdUHK on three separate occasions between December 2022 and April 2023. During those visits, Dr Satu-Maarit Korte gave a public talk about Finland’s education system, while Prof Maasilta delivered a public seminar on the dangers and promises of social media from the point of view of media educators.

In June 2023, team members from EdUHK visited the University of Lapland, and had the opportunity to meet with Vice Rector, Prof Satu Uusiautti, Director of International Relations Mari-Anna Suurmunne, and Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof Tuija Turunen, who is also UArctic Chair and leads the UNITWIN/UNESCO Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity. In August 2023, team members from EdUHK visited the University of Lapland for the second time, and conducted teaching sessions on topics such as AI literacy and intercultural communication to MA students studying the Global Media Education course.

FHM is currently planning to establish formal student and staff exchange programmes with the Faculty of Education of the University of Lapland.
