Year-5 student Carlos Chow Yin Hong of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) programme has received the “For Our Future scholarships” and the championship of “The 9th Hong Kong Outstanding Prospective Teachers Award”.
Established by the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation, the former highly sought-after scholarship was presented to Carlos, who stood out from some 200 candidates and was among the 16 awardees from 13 tertiary institutions. His meritorious attributes, especially his exemplary academic achievements, positive social contributions and commitment to contributing to the betterment of Hong Kong, were highly commended by the panel members.
The latter award was conferred by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association to honour prospective teachers who have demonstrated exemplary teaching skills and an unswerving passion for education. Carlos was offered the championship among 116 outstanding teacher-to-be candidates from different universities in Hong Kong.
As an education-majored student, Carlos hopes to initiate curriculum changes in the future to minimise inequalities in education and help disadvantaged students achieve upward mobility. “Throughout the years of doing community services in Hong Kong and abroad, I have witnessed how the underprivileged groups suffer from social inequality. My service trips in Cambodia and Macedonia, in particular, made me realise that I should not take free education for granted,” he said.
Having received different honours which also include the Hong Kong Top 10 Outstanding Tertiary Student, Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship, Tai Po District Outstanding Youth, Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship etc., Carlos was determined not to be a “taker”, but a “giver” to use his skills, knowledge and expertise to repay back to society. He will pursue an Mphil programme at The University of Cambridge in the academic year of 2022-23, hoping to extend his knowledge in relation to English Education and enhance his capacity to drive impactful changes for the education sector of Hong Kong.
