Recipient of The 2020 Outstanding Thesis Award: Dr Lau Chaak Ming

Dr Lau Chaak Ming of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) received The 2020 Outstanding Thesis Award of The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong. The doctoral research of Dr Lau pinpoints the core function of aa3 (啊), the most frequently used sentence-final particle in Cantonese, with an aim to ascertain its structural position on the sentential periphery. The study not only improves the understanding of Cantonese grammar but also shows how human interaction is encoded in our grammar. The study of Cantonese particles is a promising line of research that will bring more insight into the study of the syntax-pragmatics interface.

Dr Lau joined The Education University of Hong Kong in July 2020 as an Assistant Professor of LML. He is interested in both theoretical and computational linguistics. He is also a digital humanities practitioner who founded a number of language resource and corpus projects, including the dictionary project words.hk, gamification platform CantoSounds and mobile input method CantoKey.
