The Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) assuredly honed my language skills and thereby enabled me to use English in a wide diversity of contexts. The English for Academic Purposes offered in Year 1 deserves particular praise as it served to underpin my academic English for the later four years. Despite how arduous it was, the Honours Project that I completed in my last year of study indeed pushed me to a high level of academic writing. The 10-week immersion programme in Durham, one of the highlights of the five years, literally immersed me in an environment where I could use English in an authentic, real-life context. The rewards that the programme offered me manifested themselves in my IELTS result. The academic texts in the reading exam were easily comprehensible to me, while the speaking exam, which required colloquial English, also did not panic me. I am grateful that many of the professors that I met at The Education University of Hong Kong, especially those lecturing on literature, have inspired me to make reading habitual. When you read as widely as possible, you do not find English a stranger in virtually every context.
