Speaker: Dr LEE Ju Seong

In today’s digital era, increasing numbers of youth around the world are learning English outside classrooms, especially by using technology. The presenter refers it as Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE). Research indicates that IDLE-oriented activities are associated with affective dimensions of English learning. These activities also have positive consequences for linguistic and cognitive aspects of English learning, and enhance students’ perceptions of English as an International Language. Notwithstanding more than 10 years of research about and practice in IDLE, in addition to drastic advancements in digital technology, IDLE is still considered, at instructional levels, a peripheral rather than a mainstream element in second language learning. In this talk, the presenter will discuss this issue by 1) shedding light on IDLE as an emerging phenomenon among contemporary English learners, 2) offering empirical data on the relationship between IDLE and language learning outcomes, and 3) providing pedagogical recommendations for English teachers.
