I have a strong interest in human flourishing and in the ways in which culture and the arts—literature, film, and theatre—can contribute to health and well-being. Equally strong is my commitment to the cinemas of small nations, to transnational cinemas, and to creative processes that involve collaboration between the Global North and Global South.
Students with research ideas falling into the following broad categories are very welcome to reach out to me for an initial discussion:
- Environmental aesthetics
- Creativity under constraint
- Cultural production in the context of health and well-being
- Medi-cinema
- The role of risk in the creative arts
- Cultural policy
- Film education
- Transnational cinema
- Talent development in the creative arts
Many of my former PhD students now hold distinguished academic positions at leading universities.
These scholars include:
Professor Scott MacKenzie, Head of Film and Media at Queen's University in Canada;
Professor Adam Muller, Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program at the University of Manitoba;
Professor Haidee Wasson, Associate Dean of Faculty Relations and Inclusion at Concordia University in Canada;
Dr Jason Lau, Richard Lee Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for the Study of the United States and the Asian Institute, University of Toronto.
I have published books with my former students, for example the edited volume Emotion and the Arts (with Sue Laver), Purity and Provocation (with Scott MacKenzie) and Cinema and Nation (with Scott MacKenzie).
