Thanks to the founding Head Professor Cheung Hin Tat, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) has enjoyed continued development since its establishment in 2012. In her position as the new Head of the Department, Dr Jackie Lee Fung King has continued to work towards the advancement of the Department together with all LML colleagues. Over the past year, LML has achieved milestones in teaching, research and knowledge transfer, particularly in the area of Digital Humanities for Multilingual Matters. Dr Angel Ma Qing and her team (Drs Rebecca Chen Hsueh Chu, Jackie Lee Fung King and Wang Lixun) won the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2019 Silver Award for their Knowledge Transfer project “Educational Linguistics 2.0 – The Use of Corpora in Language Teaching”, which succeeded in promoting the innovative corpus-based pedagogy to school teachers in Hong Kong and in the Greater Bay Area. Further, LML hosted two international academic events in the pursuit of innovative scholarship and effective research. They were the School of Cantonese Studies and the International Conference on Multilingual Acquisition and Multilingual Education, where hundreds of eminent speakers from Hong Kong and different parts of the world shared and exchanged their research findings. Another important academic event, the XXth International CALL Research Conference, jointly organised by LML and University of Antwerp, Belgium, was held from 10 to 12 July 2019. Through the Department’s continuous engagement in knowledge transfer activities and scholarly work, LML aims to contribute to the academic world and the wider community, and raise its profile and impact in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
