Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education [MAGHE]

Led by professors from different fields of study, we happily travelled through an international space where history and the future intersect.

Throughout the year, I have always felt lucky to have had the opportunity to join the MAGHE family and to be exposed to a wonderful new world. Led by professors from different fields of study, we happily travelled through an international space where history and the future intersect. From global history to regional history, from education itself to the connection between education and all parts of society, we looked at education through the lens of history and development, exploring the value and possibilities of applying the history of education to modern and globalised education. In my communication with my classmates and teachers, I gradually learned to look at the objects of study with a critical and holistic view, giving me more room for exploration. In addition, I learned a lot from the research projects and presented on topics that interested me with the help of Dr Klaus Dittrich, for which I am very grateful. All in all, I love MAGHE!

MAGHE has opened the door of a research hall for me, allowing me to enter the path of future exploration in the field of education and history.

It is a great honour to be a student of the MAGHE programme at The Education University of Hong Kong. This programme combines a global historical perspective with pedagogy, giving us the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the relationship between education and social development.

Although my undergraduate major was not in education or history, the rich curriculum and professional guidance of my professors have opened my mind to a deeper analysis of the causes, processes and effects of historical events, especially as they relate to trends of change in the field of education.

MAGHE is like a "family" and our professors not only patiently explain knowledge and discuss problems with us, but also encourage and support us like friends. In the last lesson of each semester, we were all sad to leave and we held up our cell phones to take pictures and leave a good memory.

Through studying this major, I not only learned knowledge, but also chose a research project according to my interest. During this process, I received encouragement, guidance, and growth, and also gained the joy of exploration. The effort requires perseverance and calm. This is the most valuable thing I have learned.

In addition to my studies, FHM and MAGHE organised many worthwhile activities, such as the Global Histories of Education Dialogue, and EdUHK provided a wealth of extracurricular activities, such as the New Year's Concert, sports and foreign language classes, which allowed us to make surprising discoveries throughout our learning journey.

MAGHE has opened the door of a research hall for me, allowing me to enter the path of future exploration in the field of education and history. “The sun is shining again”, a quote from our professor, Dr Klaus Dittrich, who always inspired me to cherish every opportunity to try and grow, and to look forward to my future endeavours and progress in more research experiences.

The programme is great. The course “Globalising History” taught by Dr Jason Petrulis was very interesting. It allowed us to learn about global history from micro-historical perspectives as small as a carpet or a wig. The course “The History of International Schooling in East Asia” conducted by Dr Klaus Dittrich deepened students' understanding of the topic in the form of student presentations and paper reflection. For the Research Project, I was very satisfied and impressed by Dr Hui Kwok-wai’s dedication to help me with the research topic I was interested in. We also had the opportunity to participate in many education and history-related seminars and exchange with other universities. Finally, every professor is very friendly, and they tried to remember everybody’s name and helped us with learning and living. All of these experiences have been worthwhile and meaningful. MAGHE helped me to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher, just as I had hoped.
