Ms Huang Jiayiran, Year 2 Student from Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language Studies and Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) in 2023/24
Growing up in Xinjiang, I embarked on my university journey at The Education University of Hong Kong, being uncertain about my future as a teacher.
However, I found inspiration in Dr Wang Lixun’s class, where interactive activities and digital learning had a profound impact on me. Motivated by his passion for teaching, I aspired to become a teacher at that moment and set the goal of becoming an enthusiastic teacher like him.
As a non-local student, I am unfamiliar with the education landscape in Hong Kong, so my academic advisor suggested I participate in the internship organised by FHM. During my internship at St. Paul’s Primary Catholic School (SPPCS), I gained valuable guidance from senior educators who helped me navigate my way forward. My supervisor, Ms Hon, shared her insights and experience in teaching, the workplace, and life paths with me. I was truly blessed to gain this precious opportunity to work with and learn from them.
As time went by, I realised that our impact as educators extends beyond academics. After being given the opportunity to deliver a speech at the weekly assembly, my student approached me and said, “I just want to be like you, a public speaker!” We can empower students to dream big and pursue their passions by serving as role models. As educators, we have the unique opportunity to inspire, motivate, and instil confidence in our students, helping them realise their potential and envision a brighter future.
The close bond between students and teachers makes SPPCS a caring family. The marvellous experience at SPPCS and EdUHK undoubtedly spurred my self-development and shaped my personal growth. It is my starting point with my aspiration to make a positive impact on students’ lives, which I will never forget.
Recognising the huge impact of education, I volunteered to give lessons to underprivileged children in Nepal. Through education, I aimed to bring hope to some of the poorest children in the world. The trip further reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and the role of committed educators in making a difference in society.
