The ‘Comparative Cultures of Care’ Project under the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) has successfully hosted the ‘Youth Caring Leadership Training and Action Program’ from 10 to 27 February 2023. This innovative program, conducted in partnership with a local NGO VolTra, emerged as a dynamic platform for nurturing compassionate youth leaders with a cross-cultural perspective. It attracted 321 participants, including 99 EdUHK students from three Faculties and 222 students from over 52 countries.
The program consisted of three virtual training sessions and two stages of Mission Challenges Game on VolTra’s mobile application Goodmates. Through those online workshops, participants were introduced to caring leadership skills, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), design thinking prowess, and change-makers’ social project experiences. At the end of the program, 40 winners were elected according to their performance. The top 20 EdUHK participants were awarded work camp quotas to join VolTra's international work camp.
As exemplary participants, all the winners took part in an in-depth focus group interview with the project team. Their evaluation of the program and reflection on caring citizenship have brought inspiration to youth education and contributed to our publication on the relevant discipline.
The program's positive impact was also evident through participants’ feedback on the post-program survey. Over 60% of participants acknowledged the program's role in deepening their comprehension of care, nurturing a heightened interest in care-related matters, and even inspiring career trajectories in the realm of compassion. Moreover, the program fostered an increased commitment to local communities, emphasising its role in inspiring meaningful change at both personal and societal levels.
