Zheng Yanlun Zean, Year 4 Student from the BA(Lang Studies) in 2022/23
As I face the end of my university life, I often think of moments from the past few years. Even though it was full of many regrets, it also had value to look back on. Over the years, we became the pioneers of online teaching in the context of social movements and pandemics. A professor once said that we witnessed history and became history. As humanities students, we taste the life of the present as we taste literature, feeling the emotions and thoughts from people of the new era. As a result, we have more opportunities to master critical thinking than we have to.
Studying at university makes me feel longer than it used to because almost all the courses take us across thousands of years of Chinese civilisation. Knowing that the word "藝" has more than 20 meanings and has undergone numerous changes in its rhyme makes me realise that education is not only a transmission of knowledge, but also a transmission of an untouchable cultural stream, which makes me look forward to becoming an educator.
During my time at university, I also enjoyed exploring my unknown self while giving back to the community, such as volunteering to promote the importance of positive thinking in the community and being recommended by the university to become a Youth Ambassador under the Youth Development Commission to help envision the future of Hong Kong. Each fragment of my identity has been a part of constructing the concept of being known as "me".
Rather than "regret", I tend to describe the past few years of university life as a "struggle". We struggled with an unavoidable natural disaster and an unremarkable life just because we believed the next crossroad would be a new chapter.
