Cheng Sam Yuet, Year 4 Student of BEd(CHI HIST) (2019/20)
In summer 2019, I participated in an internship programme at the Hong Kong Museum of History. The internship scheme was co-organised by the Department of Literature and Culture Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Museum of History. The purpose of the internship is to promote participants’ awareness and opportunity to engage in the museum’s work and operation. I learned a lot from the internship and believed that it will be of great benefit to other students in the Chinese History and History programmes.
Through this internship programme, I had a lot of valuable opportunities to experience the work of the museum. For example, the museum staff introduced us how to repair artefacts, how to maintain and collect cultural relics, and so on. What benefited me the most was that the curator introduced the “Hong Kong Story” exhibition to us in detail, from design concept, scene layout to the theme of each area. They had also arranged experienced guides to show us how to guide the tour. I now have a deeper understanding of the “Hong Kong Story” pavilion and exhibits, the Hong Kong history, and which part could be used for my teaching in future. I think this internship programme had enriched participants’ historical knowledge, and the skills of a tour guide, which could be integrated into my teaching in the future. This internship programme is very meaningful for students who are studying in Chinese History and History programmes. If this internship programme continues in the future, I hope to participate again and will strongly encourage other students to join too.
