Exploring Belt & Road:
A Study Tour to the Silk Road in Gansu Province
The Department of Chinese Language Studies of the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) took a study tour to the Silk Road in Gansu province from 14 to 20 December 2024. The objectives of this tour are: to enhance students' cultural literacy, motivate their interest in cultural learning, and cultivate their sense of national and ethnic identity. Twenty-eight students and teachers joined the tour and visited two renowned universities and a number of historical sites along the Silk Road.
The group visited Lanzhou University and Northwest Normal University during the seven-day tour. Prof Li Lifang, Dean of the School of Chinese Languages and Literatures at Lanzhou University, introduced the school's history and characteristics. Dr Feng Zhenhui, the delegation leader, presented the research and teaching at the Department of Chinese Language Studies. The teachers and students from both universities shared their experiences and insights on language learning, cultural heritage, and international perspectives. At Northwest Normal University, the student representatives from both universities gave presentations on the development of Chinese language education. The delegation also interacted with Prof Yang Naming (Dean of the School of Teacher Education) and Prof Zhao Xiaoxia, in the discussion of the future of Chinese language education.

This study tour deepened students' appreciation of Silk Road culture and fostered a stronger sense of national pride, inspiring them to continue their academic and cultural exploration.
These kinds of study tours have been on the agenda of the Department of Chinese Language Studies. In May 2024, for example, the department organized the Lingnan Cultural Study Tour to Guangzhou. These activities are intended to nurture students’ deeper understanding of the history and culture of our motherland and a greater sense of national identity.
