Territory-wide Junior Secondary Chinese History and Culture Quiz
Organised by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative of the People’s Republic of China (EDB) and co-organised by the Faculty of Humanities and Department of Literature and Cultural Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the Finals and the Award Ceremony of the 2022/23 Territory-wide Junior Secondary Chinese History and Culture Quiz were held today (20 May) on the EdUHK Tai Po Campus.
Attending the Ceremony were Deputy Secretary of the EDB, Ms Teresa Chan Mo-Ngan; Chief Curriculum Development Officer of Personal, Social and Humanities Education Section of the EDB, Dr. Ip Sum-ming; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of EdUHK, Professor Erni John Nguyet; and Acting Head of the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, Professor Eric Yu Kwan-wai.
The objective of the event was to promote and enhance the enthusiasm of Hong Kong junior secondary school students in learning about Chinese history and culture. Through friendly competitions between schools, it is hoped that students can develop their interest in learning related knowledge, which will contribute to the inheritance of Chinese culture and the development of good character in the long run.
Open to Secondary One to Secondary Three students in Hong Kong, the competition received an overwhelming response, drawing the participation of over 10,000 students from 102 schools.
The competition was divided into preliminary and final rounds. The top 12 teams that advanced to the finals and the four most outstanding teams competed for the championship title. The award ceremony was held after the final round to honor the participating students for their enthusiasm in learning about Chinese history and culture.
Addressing the ceremony, Ms Chan said, “Participating in different historical and cultural activities allows students to understand, appreciate and inherit the excellent Chinese history and culture from multiple perspectives. It is our wish that the participating students can learn from each other, appreciate the fun of learning Chinese history and culture, and consolidate their knowledge to apply what they have learned in their future studies. Despite the conclusion of the event, I have every confidence that the students will be able to grasp this learning experience, extend the spirit of teamwork and dedication to their future studies, and create success in life for themselves.”
EdUHK President (Designate) and Vice President (Academic) and Provost, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said through video recording, “Through this activity, we hope students can learn about Chinese history and culture with a positive and proactive attitude, inherit Chinese culture, and cultivate moral character and virtue. Only by drawing lessons from history can we create a better and happier future for humanity, and become a new generation with a sense of national consciousness and the courage to take on responsibilities.
Shun Tak Fraternal Association Tam Pak Yu College took home the championship, Ying Wa College was the runner-up, and La Salle College and TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College were awarded third and fourth place respectively.
