The Third Seminar of the Global Histories of Education Dialogue co-organized by the Master of Arts in Global Histories of Education (MAGHE) and the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) will be held on 15 November 2023.
This seminar presents new research on the reception and subsequent transformation of John Dewey’s ideas in China. In citizenship education, Chinese educators developed the idea of schools as a “miniature republic”, a concept that only on surface resembled Dewey’s original thought. In engineering education, Deweyan pragmatism was mobilised for a solution-oriented approach that would train a new generation of engineers capable of transforming China. In both cases, the practical implementation of Dewey’s vision responded to China’s political, social and economic agendas.
All are welcome!
