LML Secured the Dean's International Research Award and Received Peter Crosthwaite as the Collaborator (LML)

Dr Angel Ma from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) and her colleague, Dr Peter Crosthwaite from the University of Queensland, were honored for their innovative work in corpus linguistics and its impact on language teaching and teacher education. Their collaborative research achievement was recognised by the Faculty of Humanities with the Dean's International Research Collaboration Award.

 

From 8 Jan to 18 Jan, Dr Crosthwaite visited The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), during which an online symposium on AI in language learning and a hybrid workshop were held. The two events attracted over 300 participants, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback and demonstrating the vibrant potential of combining AI with language education. The success of these initiatives underscores the significance of Dean's International Research Collaboration Award in fostering innovative research and nurturing fruitful international partnerships that promise to steer language education towards an exciting future.

CHL Lecture Series: Chinese Language Research and Teaching (CHL)

 

Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) actively invites international scholars for seminars and lectures. Prof Li Guofang, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Transnational/Global Perspectives of Language and Literacy Education of Children and Youth, University of British Columbia, delivered a lecture on "Diglossia and Intracultural Teaching: Chinese Heritage Language Teachers' Perspectives and Practices in Canada" on 5 Dec 2023. During her talk, Prof Li Guofang offered insightful suggestions to continuous professional learning for heritage language teachers in linguistically and culturally diverse educational contexts. This lecture was conducted in hybrid mode with 33 participants. Prof Li had interactive and inspiring discussions with the audience after her presentation.  

 

Another lecture by Prof Bianca Basciano from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice was delivered on 24 Jan 2024. It focused on "Verbal Reduplication in Sinitic: A Typological and Areal Perspective." It explored the semantic values and patterns of verbal reduplication across Sinitic and non-Sinitic languages in East and Southeast Asia, highlighting the relationship between structure and meaning. The lecture was attended by 55 participants, including scholars from mainland China, European and Singapore, as well as many of our colleagues and students.

ELE Elevates Language Learning Through Metaverse Conference (ELE)

 

The 3rd International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning (ILTAL) 2023 was held successfully in the virtual Metaverse, emphasizing innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in education. By going virtual, the conference saved approximately HKD 200,000 and reduced CO2 emissions by 72 tons, showcasing the environmental benefits of such events.

 

The online conference provided a dynamic forum for 79 presenters from around the globe to discuss language education policies, practices, and technologies, featuring 6 keynotes, 2 featured sessions, and 2 workshops. Attendees from diverse regions including Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, the UK, Russia, the US, Australia, Germany, Hungary, and Spain contributed to its international scope. The virtual Metaverse conference proved to be a great success, fostering knowledge sharing, networking, and exploration of the metaverse's potential in education. The achievements of the 3rd ILTAL Conference have laid the foundation for future endeavors in advancing innovation and inclusivity in language teaching and learning.

Dr Fung Chiwang's Book Explores Intellectual History of Tang and Song Dynasties (LCS)

 

What is the relationship between the spiritual (supernatural) world and the past (historical) world with people in the present world? How did people in the Tang and Song dynasties, as well as in modern times, imagine and interpret these realms beyond the physical world?

 

This book's research encompasses Tang and Song literature, history, and intellectual history. Its objective is to illustrate how ancient individuals comprehended or envisioned the world through diverse literary genres, events, rituals, and concepts. On one hand, it delves into how people contemplated ghosts, gods, and history. On the other hand, it endeavors to uncover the thoughts and ideas of individuals underlying the written words, providing inspiration for readers to contemplate. This book caters to readers interested in ancient Chinese culture, particularly in Chinese supernatural entities, intellectual history, and conceptual history.

 

Discovering the Literary Treasures of Tai Po (RCCLLC)

 

The "Taipo Literary Trail: Hong Kong Literature in Tai Po" exhibition organised by Research Centre for Chinese Literature & Literary Culture (RCCLLC) was a resounding success. From 22 Nov to 13 Dec 2023, the exhibition captivated visitors, immersing them in the rich literary and artistic heritage of Tai Po.

 

Through texts, images, and exhibits, the exhibition offered a unique glimpse into the narratives and stories associated with Tai Po in Hong Kong literature. Visitors were able to explore the cultural significance of Tai Po and its influence on the literary landscape of the district. The exhibition garnered significant attention from both literature enthusiasts and the general public. It served as a platform for fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Tai Po's literary heritage, while also showcasing the talent and creativity of local writers.
