Dr Andy Chin’s guest lecture at UBC.
Dr Andy Chin Chi On, Head and Associate Professor of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies was invited to give an online guest lecture entitled Language Archiving in the Digital Era at Hong Kong Studies Initiative, The University of British Columbia on 5 February 2021. In this lecture, Dr Chin discussed the development of language archiving and language documentation works from traditional labour-intensive approaches such as participant observation and fieldwork investigations to the online and digital mode which made use of computer technology. Dr Chin illustrated the development with his Cantonese digital archive The Corpus of Mid-20th Century Hong Kong Cantonese 二十世纪中期香港粤语语料库 (https://hkcc.eduhk.hk/), and discussed how the digital archival data could benefit humanities research.
