Supported by the Centre for Popular Culture in the Humanities and the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies in collaboration with the Modernist Studies in Asia network, the international conference “Modernism and Empathy” was held on 15 to 16 June 2018 and attracted approximately 50 delegates from Asian and European countries including India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Poland, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US).
The keynote lectures were delivered by Professor Derek Matravers (The Open University, UK) on the subject of “Empathy and the Reader” and Professor Patrick Colm Hogan (University of Connecticut, US) on “The Complexity of Cognition: Dorothy Richardson’s Pointed Roofs”. The concept of empathy was explored from a number of angles during the conference, and discussions delved into areas as diverse as narratology and cognitive science. Other events organised alongside the conference included a multilingual Bloomsday reading in Central on 16 June 2018 and an architectural walking tour of Causeway Bay on 17 June 2018, conducted by Dr Prudence Lau Leung Kwok, Assistant Professor of Department of Cultural and Creative Arts of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).
