Department of Literature and Cultural Studies – New Departmental Seminar Series

2017 saw the launch of a new departmental seminar series within the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS). Spearheaded by Dr Jeffrey Clapp, the series aims to incorporate approximately three lunchtime talks each semester, delivered both by internal and external speakers within the broader fields of literature, cultural studies and history.  Five talks were conducted by the end of 2017:

• Dr David Schley, Assistant Professor of History at Hong Kong Baptist University, discussed the complex implications of the introduction of a new form of currency, overseen by a railway company, in Baltimore in the mid-nineteenth century. 
• Professor Eric Yu, Head of LCS, focused on 1970s Hong Kong street poetry and everyday modernity.
• Dr Elizabeth Ho, Associate Professor of English at the Lingnan University, invited attendees to consider cartography within the context of the graphic novel.  
• Dr Eli Park Sorenson, Assistant Professor in the Department of English at The Chinese University Hong Kong (CUHK), addressed the question of realism and capitalism in the novels of Rohinton Mistry.
• Dr Yvonne Wong, Lecturer at the Community College of City University of Hong Kong, considered acoustic architecture in the work of early-twentieth-century British writer Dorothy Richardson.
