Many language teachers and researchers in various educational settings are applying computers and Internet in their teaching and research. Many also believe that CALL (Computer-assisted language learning) has great potentials for assisting second language teaching and language learning. In this talk, I will briefly talk about three major research trends in CALL. The following topics will be covered.
1. Digital gaming and language learning: These will include various games such as commercial video games, mobile games, simulation games, serious games, Alternate Reality Games, Augmented Reality Games, and MMORPG games. The potentials and limitations of each of these games will be briefly discussed.
2. Mobile-assisted language learning: First, several well-known Apps for language learning will be compared. In addition, we will also discuss some key issues related to classroom use of mobile devices and mobile games. A classroom mobile response system called Zuvio will be introduced and student feedback will be discussed. The Apps developed at my university will also be presented.
3. Corpus and CALL: various types of corpora can be used for language teaching and learning. Monolingual and bilingual corpora can also be used to support various E-learning systems. Some websites and examples will be shown and discussed.
