讲座摘要 (Abstract):
The provision of additional language support for migrant-background children in mainstream schooling has been a key concern in research on migration and education. A variety of theories, policies and practices have been developed in different parts of the world to address this issue which are intended to cater to different needs of the local context. In England, the English support for linguistic minority children in state-funded schools is referred to as EAL (English as an additional language) which features a systemic child-centred approach with characteristics shaped by historical, ideological, policy and practical factors. In this talk, I will start with some observations of the current practice of EAL in English schools. This is followed by critical and contextualised analysis of the key issues arising from these observations. I will draw upon recent research in the UK as well as my own research in a series of linked projects on the learning and assessment of bilingual children with EAL to exemplify the intersection of EAL policy, theory and practice. I conclude by (re)emphasising the role of language(s) in the education and integration of migrant-background children and the importance of defining a broader knowledge base for teaching in linguistically diverse contexts. I will also experiment a comparative contextual approach to my presentation by constantly inviting the audience to reflect on the equivalent issue in Hong Kong mainstream schools in relation to the provision of Chinese as an additional language for ethnic minority students.
