Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages [MATESOL]

Admission

We welcome applications from local and non-local applicants. If you are required to obtain a student visa / entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration in order to study in Hong Kong, you are regarded as a non-local applicant. Residence status is not a criterion for selection.

Kindly note that applications will be processed on a rolling basis. Places are filled continually throughout the admission period, and there is a possibility that the quotas may be full before the deadline. Early application is therefore strongly encouraged. Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend admission interviews.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised Bachelor's degree and preferably meet at least one of the following requirements:

  1. a recognised language teaching qualification; or
  2. working experience in English language teaching.

Holders of a bachelor's degree in disciplines other than English may also be considered.

Candidates without a teaching qualification should be aware that MATESOL is an advanced academic qualification that is most valuable in conjunction with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (English) (PGDE or equivalent) qualification. Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should normally fulfil one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

  • Overall score of IELTS 7.0 with no subtest lower than 6.5 (academic version) (the test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years); or
  • TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based test) (the test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years); or
  • other equivalent qualifications.

The results of IELTS/TOEFL provided should be within two years (i.e., for the 2025/26 intake, the IELTS/TOEFL test must be obtained on or after 1 Jan 2023); and

The results of IELTS/TOEFL should be “taken in test centres” (i.e., tests taken online such as IELTS indicator/IELTS Online and TOEFL Home Editions are NOT accepted).

Notes to Non-local Applicants

  • Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should include their IELTS/TOEFL test result taken in test centres within 2 years in the application documents. Otherwise, the application may be delayed.

  • It normally takes 6-8 weeks for the Hong Kong Immigration Department to process visa applications. You are therefore strongly advised to submit your application as early as possible.

  • Your application can be completed online without going through any education agencies.
