The Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) held two public lectures on nature writing on 30 September and 4 November 2024 respectively, aiming at promoting the value of nature writing to students, the Faculty, and the wider public. Sponsored by the Faculty of Humanities, the lectures featured two Hong Kong writers, Ms Human Yip and Ms Chio Hio-tong, who shared their experiences in nature writing.
The first lecture, titled ‘The Natural World of Human Yip’, was held on 30 September 2024. Ms Yip shared her insights into rural life in Lai Chi Wo, detailing her experiences in farming and how she uses writing to document and express her relationship with nature.
The second lecture, ‘Urban Birds: A Chronicle of City Life’, was organised on 4 November 2024. In this session, Ms Chio discussed her observations of various urban bird species, narrating their lives through prose and exploring the complex relationship between humans and birds.
Both lectures were conducted in hybrid format, attracting over 200 participants with enthusiastic responses. The events successfully promoted nature writing in Hong Kong while also contributing to the University’s commitment to sustainable development goals.
