Aiming to promote learning of classical culture and facilitate the dissemination of Chinese culture, the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education (CRCLE) collaborated with the Faculty of Humanities to jointly organise the ‘Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Classic Poetry Karaoke Competition’ in the 2023/24 academic year. The award ceremony was successfully held on 17 May 2024.
As part of CRCLE’s CRAC project entitled ‘An AI-enhanced Way to Learn Chinese Culture: Starting from Classical Chinese Poetry’, the ‘Fun to Chinese Poetry’ application was developed and promoted to the academic community. This competition aims to encourage students to sing ancient poetry through the application, thus achieving the effect of joyful learning. The competition received over 900 submissions and involved two rounds of review by judges, followed by the final selection of major awards for the primary school (lower and upper grades) and secondary school categories. At the award presentation ceremony, Dr Ma Qing, Associate Dean of FHM, along with the Director and Associate Directors of CRCLE, presented the winners with trophies and certificates. Some of the winners also performed live, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.
The ‘Fun to Chinese Poetry’ application has been widely embraced by schools since its launch in late June 2023. As of 22 June 2024, the number of total downloads has reached 180,000, greatly enhancing the influence of EdUHK and CRCLE in the Chinese language education community.
