The Faculty of Humanities (FHM) has initiated two academic trips to bring students from FHM and the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA, FLASS) on cross-disciplinary journeys to top mainland universities. One group focusing on visual art visited Tsinghua University, Beijing; the other music-focused group visited the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and two more prestigious universities in Chengdu. These trips provided a unique opportunity for students to engage in an exchange of ideas, foster collaboration, and experience the rich cultural heritage of mainland China.
From 1 to 8 June 2024, students visited Tsinghua University, where they attended a series of lectures and workshops, delving into various academic disciplines and innovative artistic projects. They had the chance to interact with esteemed professors and fellow students. Visiting Tsinghua Art Museum and other prominent art museums and institutions in Beijing broadened the students’ academic horizons and helped build professional networks.
The trip to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music took place from 26 to 31 May 2024. Students immersed themselves in the world of music and performing arts. They participated in masterclasses, attended performances, and explored the integration of traditional Chinese music with contemporary practices. In addition, students visited Sichuan Normal University and Southwest Minzu University during their stay in Chengdu. They engaged in music concerts and academic activities, gaining insights into the two universities’ diverse music programmes.
These cross-disciplinary trips not only enriched the students’ academic knowledge, but also allowed them to gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture and arts. The experience fostered a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration and intellectual curiosity, leaving a lasting impact on all participants. The students from humanities and creative arts will collaborate to produce creative work as a result of these trips.
