Ms Pang Wing-tung, Year 4 Student from Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Studies and Digital Communication in 2023/24
The company I worked for in my internship aims to help non-Chinese students learn reading Chinese. As a digital assistant, I was responsible for developing digital teaching materials and storybooks as well as assisting in organising a storytelling workshop. I was able to apply my skills, such as managing a database of materials, editing audio files, translating, and proofreading book glossaries.
During this internship, I learned how to tell an interesting story. We had three workshops on how to be a good storyteller, where guests shared their tactics. These tactics included choosing a funnier story at the beginning to draw children’s attention, interacting with children, guiding them to think, and concluding with the story’s moral values. To this end, we chose the storybook called Dessert Book.
The knowledge and learning experience I gained from FHM enabled me to complete my internship successfully. My main duty as a digital assistant was preparing digital materials. I studied a course ‘Language Information Management’ and gained some knowledge about digital humanities, which helped me finish my tasks efficiently. Meanwhile, I could leverage the know-how from the course ‘Words and Their Meanings’ to handle the glossaries. It was a very meaningful and wonderful experience to apply what I have learned from my courses and FHM to help non-Chinese read and learn Chinese through storybooks.
