Mr Chan Pak Hei, Graduate of BA(TCSL) (2021)
It is my honour to be a student of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (BA[TCSL]) programme. The programme offered me a clear career pathway to becoming a professional L2 Chinese teacher. Throughout the two years of study, I realised that teachers at The Education University of Hong Kong didn’t only focus on transferring Chinese or educational psychology-related knowledge, but also act as counsellors in giving academic and emotional support to students.
Even though the programme is a BA degree, I am still able to experience a fruitful practical field experience in teaching foreign students Chinese. It is not easy to teach Chinese in English, but with the help of the programme’s curriculum, I am well-trained to accomplish it. My bilingual skills are being trained up, which makes my current teaching easier. Besides, the programme arranged several site visits to top local international schools. The diversity of learning and teaching methods at international schools really inspired me. It made me to be determined to become a teacher at an international school after those visits.
For students who wish to join the education sector, especially those aiming to work at international schools, the BA(TCSL) programme will probably be one of the best choices. The importance of Chinese is getting more obvious in this fast-changing world. According to different statistics, the number of foreign students who are interested to learn Chinese keeps rising. The BA(TCSL) programme provides a very good opportunity as a stepping stone to let you know more about this sector, and it will lead you to be an educator not only in Hong Kong but also in the global world.
