Lam Chak Lun, Year 4 Student of BA(TCSL) (2020/21)
Due to social distancing measures under the coronavirus pandemic, schools have switched to online teaching in 2020/21. At first, I thought there would not be any internship opportunity in my university life. However, thanks to the special arrangement arranged by the teachers of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, I would be able to participate in the online field experience of Beijing Language and Culture University.
In order to help us develop a comprehensive understanding of the learning and teaching of teaching Chinese as a second language before our field experience, our teachers even sought an opportunity to have an online class observation in the Sha Tin Junior School.
The online class observation was about two and a half hours in total, shorter than one lesson at the University. Although the observation time seemed limited, it allowed us to closely observe the learning and teaching of Chinese as a second language in an authentic classroom setting, which is totally different from the theory that we have learned from courses. Therefore, the online class observation was a rare opportunity for me. At the same time, it also enlightened me with some new ideas on teaching Chinese as a second language through online teaching, such as how to enable or encourage students to actively participate in the online lesson and how to provide them with a motivation to learn Chinese.
I hope I will be able to apply those teaching skills and knowledge that I have learned from the online class observation in the near future and provide students with a rich and interesting Chinese lesson!
