‘Spoken and Written Languages that Cross Boundaries: Literature and Thought in the 20th Century in East Asia’ was a workshop coordinated by Dr Li Yuen Mei Fanny of the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS). This academic event, co-organised by LCS and Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, was held at EdUHK on the 23 to 24 of June 2017. Focusing on “yan” (spoken language) and “wen” (written language), the workshop explored China’s path of self-strengthening in the 20th Century and her interactions with her East Asian neighbours. It also attempted to examine new ways of amalgamating methodologies in the study of such areas as literature, linguistics, and history. The workshop was in four sessions, and two round-table conferences were held. Opening speeches were delivered by Professor Chan Kwok Kou Leonard, Director of Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture (RCCLLC), and Professor Yu Kwan Wai Eric, Head of LCS. Professor Yamaguchi Mamoru (Japan University), Professor Don Snow (Duke Kunshan University), Professor Huang Ziping (Hong Kong Baptist University), Dr Tsumori Aki (Kobe City University of Foreign Studies) and more presented their research findings at the workshop.
Professor Ching May Bo presents her research findings on “Yue ou” (Classical Cantonese folk songs). She demonstrates this Cantonese musical and literary art after the meeting.
