The Hong Kong Publishing Federation Limited held the Award Presentation Ceremony of “The Next Writer Publication Funding Scheme – Season 2” on 20 July at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2022. Dr Elaine Choy Yat-ling, Lecturer from the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies of EdUHK, was awarded up to $500K funding support for publishing and promotion with the publication project --- “From the Village of the Present” (temporary translation), in collaboration with parent-child-themed illustrator Ms YUEN Wai-wai, and FeiFan Publication (a subsidiary of Chung Hwa Book Co.). At the ceremony, Dr Choy, with the company of her collaborators, introduced the project to the audience.
Sponsored by the government-run Create Hong Kong initiative, the funding scheme comes with an array of objectives, which are to nurture debut writers, encourage the publishing of creative works with excellent quality and potentials, bring in more creativity by filling the gaps in the industry, facilitate industry expansion locally and abroad, and ultimately cement Hong Kong’s position as a creative city. The scheme focuses on works of specific categories, namely picture books, popular science, and intangible cultural heritage, with a funding quota of three for each category. In addition to being published locally in print or multimedia formats such as audiobooks, etc., the winning works will be displayed at the annual Hong Kong Book Fair or in the Hong Kong pavilions of international book fairs, which would facilitate the exports of copyrighted works and cultivate the local and international markets, thereby further enhancing Hong Kong’s standing as the global centre of Chinese language publishing.
