“Education-plus” Internship Programme, launched by School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO), aims to groom student high-flyers and equip them with 21st century skills and positive values through exclusive learning opportunities in professional authentic contexts. Unlike other Internship Programme, students learned valuable skills through cross-sectoral training sessions and coaching from mentors who are senior executives or experienced professionals from different industries.
Authentic Learning Experiences:
- Connect with local and overseas community partners
- Apply entrepreneurial and innovative skills in a Professional Authentic Context
- Strengthen 21st Century Skills and positive values from the hands-on experience during the internship
The video is extracted from the feature video created by SPFEO. Among 13 second-year students from different non-education undergraduate programmes at the University, 6 students joining the mentored internship were from the programmes at the Faculty of Education and Human Development. These students nominated by their department have performed exceptionally well and received positive comments from their mentor and internship supervisor.
Students' Sharing
It was a golden opportunity to widen my horizons and learn here. I was not only providing in-class support but also learning with the students. For instance, by participating in the Environmental Science Course (Level IV), I could acquire knowledge of the habits of amphibians. I could also have the chance to step out of my comfort zone. Besides, while I was getting on with the gifted students, I noticed that they could have different SEN levels ranging from mild to severe. Therefore, not only does it strengthen my will to serve the typical students with SENs, but also inspires me to take care of the gifted students with SENs.
This internship has definitely practised my communication, problem-solving, writing, and accommodation skills. Also, I realise the importance of insistence. Doing unfamiliar work may be a bit boring at first because I can only do some simple work repetitively at the beginning. However, giving up is not my choice. On the contrary, as I persist in doing this work, I have been gradually exposed to more aspects of this work. The job is more enjoyable when I get to know more about it.
Lean startup methodology emphasises validated learning, in which entrepreneurs devise innovation from every trial. This mindset will help me design original activities/products for children in the future. After graduation, I may work in other organisations where I plan events and provide services to families. Utilising the lean canvas, I will observe the major problems and solutions in education, construct plans to cater to target students and keep improving my ideas from users’ feedback. I hope to use my creativity to originate innovative practices that impact children’s lives, breaking through social limitations with the united efforts of partners sharing the same aspiration.
