(2) Assessment of Competencies and Capability
Another point to developing a portfolio is for school leaders to use the
process as a means for determining if they have the capability or
competencies expected of them as leaders.
For instance, the EDB has identified a set of Six Core Areas of School
Leadership within the Key Qualities of the Principalship in Hong
Kong©. Through the process of putting together a Principal’s Portfolio
the school leader will soon determine where they fit within these Key
Qualities, or not. The process of gathering evidence and reflecting on
each piece of such is an excellent way of engaging in professional self
assessment. Put bluntly, if you can’t gather the evidence for a
particular Key Quality, then you probably investigate this.
A portfolio should consist of a collection of evidence, and reflection on
this, with regards to the Six Core Areas:
● Strategic Direction and Policy Environment
● Learning, Teaching and Curriculum
● Teacher Professional Growth and Development
● Staff and Resource Management
● Quality Assurance and Accountability
● External Connection and Communication
