PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Leading the Way Forward

The Master of International Relations and Development (MIRD) Programme provides students with advanced training in international relations and development from a comparative pan-Asian perspective and with a particular focus on the Greater China region. Designed to provide students with core theoretical, conceptual and analytical tools necessary to understand contemporary Asia, the Programme focuses on the competitive dynamics impacting the regions international relations and economic development. The Programme emphasizes experiential learning with opportunities for students to explore various issues related to development and economic transition. The Programme is designed for students intending future careers in government, think tanks, consulting firms, the not-for-profit sector and private sector organisations.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants applying to the Master of International Relations and Development should normally hold a recognized Bachelor’s degree. Applicants who obtained degrees from universities in Mainland China are required to provide an Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) issued by the CHSI (學信網) https://www.chsi.com.cn/xlcx/bgcx.jsp.

For applicants whose qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should normally fulfill one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

Overall score of IELTS 6.0 (academic version) (the test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years); or
TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based test) (the test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years); or
Band 6 in the Chinese Mainland’s College English Test (CET) (a total score of 430 or above and the test result should be valid within two years); or
Pass in the Test for English Majors-Band 8 (TEM 8); or
Grade C or above in GCSE / GCE OL English; or
Other equivalent qualifications.

For example, if you are applying for 2024/25 academic year, your IELTS / TOEFL / CET-6 test must be obtained on or after 1 January 2022.

Tests taken online such as IELTS indicator/IELTS Online and TOEFL Home Editions are NOT accepted.

Applicants who obtained degrees from overseas universities should meet Level 5 (for Bachelor degree) or above of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework. Reports for Qualifications Assessment can be applied from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) at https://www.hkcaavq.edu.hk/; or
Any other information/documentation as requested by the University.
